As visionary and owner of Archer Salon, Gari James Cuevas is the salon’s master colorist and mentor to his staff. He began his career over 30 years ago on San Francisco’s famed Maiden Lane. It was Yosh Toya and his team whose influence and philosophy guided Gari into beauty school. Yosh’s advice was, “make it fun”, so Gari obliged by traveling to New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Long Beach, and London for classes. Competing in state-wide competitions yielded two first place trophies. He finished at the top of his class, and gained the reputation for performing the fastest foil application ever to grace the halls of Miss Marty’s Beauty School.
He was immediately hired at Sherlee Rhine’s 77 Maiden Lane Salon. After a few years assisting James Bauer, he was promoted to the floor as a color specialist. According to Rhine, she had never seen anyone build so fast at such a young age. Working Sundays was a major factor in building so quickly, an aspect that he has carried over to Archer. As part of his 10-year tenure at 77 Maiden Lane, Gari served as artistic director, revamped the color program, handled media events, and consulted when 77 Maiden Lane expanded to be the largest salon west of the Mississippi designed by Steven Volpe.
After 10 years at 77 Maiden Lane, Gari joined the Joseph Cozza Salon team in the Gump’s building. During this next step of his career, he introduced balayage to their color program helping to expand and update their color repetoire. Gari attended the first hair painting class (Balayage) at Bumble and Bumble university in the Meat Packing District of New York City and later that same year attended the L’oreal Academy for balayage in SoHo. Within that same year Gari ushered in a change at Jospeh Cozza where they entire color room switched to L’Oreal. It was here that he established strong professional relationships that later help build Archer Salon.
While acting as Artistic director at Joseph Cozza, Gari attended The Academy of Art college in San Francisco. Applying fine art techniques to his coloring curriculum became his signature style. Training one’s eye to the nuances of color and shape became his passion in teaching. Approaching hair color like painting and haircutting like sculpture is fundamental to his training program today. Our reputation and continued growth at Archer is based on these principles of design. It’s what sets us apart.
Since establishing Archer in 2012, Gari has taken his time curating a diverse team of talented stylists and colorists. He also has a team of celebrity stylists/friends that travel from LA to work at Archer. This creates an environment unique in San Francisco’s salon world. Archer’s philosophy is to create a sophisticated yet intimate environment that provides the highest caliber of services in beauty. We look forward to seeing you at Archer.
